I was born hearing, but when I was four years old a teacher at school noticed that I was a bit hard of hearing and it was confirmed in hearing tests that I had high-frequency deafness. The cause? I had measles at two years old, I was a ceasarian birth, it could have been either of these things or something else.
I went to a mainstream school then did maths at university but my deafness was improving (think about that! :) all the time and by the time I started work as a software engineer it was really an issue. Eventually I tried wearing two hearing aids. I wasn't very good with them and after five years of that my hearing was so low that the audiologist decided there wasn't much point in trying to use them any more. Excellent! I hated the things not because of appearance but because they made everybody expect me to be able to hear.
I'd been going to some British Sign Language classes and now decided I had to learn BSL In earnest. I now go to all the Deaf Clubs within driving range (Taunton, Bridgwater, Weston) and so some voluntary work with local Deaf organisations.
I write. I've had some short stories and poetry published, mostly in Scots, which is my native language, and I like building websites. I used to do very feature-rich database powered websites but I found most users ignore the features so at the moment I'm more into content-rich, design-simple websites.
As a deafened, rather than born-deaf person, there's always the question of access to music. Mainly I go to goth clubs and stand near - or right up against! - the speakers. I also watch music DVDs with massive amplification and headphones, and keep trying to learn keyboarding and bass guitar - if only I had more time!
